Key objectives of working group

The key objectives of this working group are:

  • The evaluation of quality guidelines ('standards') for accreditation of stem cell laboratories in the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium, also with a view to supporting future inspection, in general in relation to the 'JACIE and Tissue Establishment standards'.
  • Exchange of general information in the form of stem cell processing and other therapeutic cellular products, for example by means of a database with data on materials, methods and results of laboratory processes. This database can be consulted by members of the WSN via the HOVON website.
  • Striving for synchronization of quality control through stem cell processing and other therapeutic cellular products, for example through organizing circulars of materials for quality control, for which as yet no program of external circulars exists.
  • Joint implementation of research in the field of stem cell transplantation and other therapeutic cellular products.
  • Combining forces as a result of which combined contact can be maintained with the industry: as a result an unequivocal clear message will be sent to the industry, which is urgently required, and uniformity will be achieved in media/resources. In addition, through joint purchasing, price advantages can be achieved, and the possibility will be created for anticipating new developments.
  • Organizing specific courses/training programs for employees of stem cell laboratories.
  • International consultation with other working groups from stem cell laboratories.

In 1999, the Working Group for Stem Cell Laboratories Netherlands (WSN) was established. The objective of the working group is to arrive at uniformity in protocols, media and working conditions through more intensive collaboration between the stem cell laboratories. Since 2000, the WSN has formally been a working group within the HOVON, and since 2004, a number of Belgian centers have also been participants. The members of the WSN represent the stem cell laboratories in the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium. Working group members are laboratory heads and (chief) technicians and quality managers of stem cell laboratories. The WSN holds a members’ meeting 2 times a year.
